이슬람 문화에서 광범위하게 볼 수 있는 장식 무늬가 아라베스크 문양이다. 아라베스크 문양은 넓은 뜻으로는 복잡하게 이어진 기하학 도형이나 무늬화된 아라비아 문자도 포함된다. 또한 그 무늬들은 넓은 화면에 그려졌다기보다는 타일로 만든 모자이크인 경우가 대부분이다.

구지량 작 'I walk the line'를 보자마자 떠오른 게 아라베스크 문양의 패턴과 무척이나 비슷하다는 점이다. 기하학적 도형을 바탕으로, 혹은 뻗어나가거나, 혹은 같은 문양을 되풀이하면서, 혹은 겹쳐진 듯이 전체 화면을 가득 채우고 있다.

작품 또한 물감으로 작업한 게 아니라 천(Fabric)을 이용했다. 구지량에게 천은 그 자체가 물감이고 붓인 셈이다. 작가는 천이 물감이나 손으로 표현하지 못하는 다양한 색감과 질감을 표현하는 최상의 소재로 여긴다. 하지만 이 작품 전체가 품고 있는 이미지나 상징성을 포착하기란 그리 쉽지 않다.

A decorative pattern found extensively in Islamic culture is the arabesque. Broadly speaking, arabesques include intricate geometric shapes and patterned Arabic script. They are also most often mosaics made of tiles rather than painted on a large surface.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw Gu Ji Liang's "I walk the line" was how similar it is to the patterns of arabesques. They are based on geometric shapes, stretching out, repeating the same pattern, or overlapping, filling the entire screen.

The works are also not made with paint, but with fabric. For Gu, the fabric itself is the paint and the brush. The artist believes that fabric is the best material to express various colors and textures that cannot be expressed by paint or hand. However, it is not easy to capture the images and symbolism of the entire work.
