서울대와 동 대학원에서 동양화를 전공한 후 뉴욕대에 3년간 유학하였다. 귀국 후 1990년대 내내 미니멀양식의 조형과 색, 면 구성의 회화작가로 활발히 활동했다. 서울의 유수 갤러리는 물론 뉴욕, 파리, 베이징 등에서 화려한 전시경력을 쌓았다. 단순한 화면과 절제된 색채를 바탕으로 한국적 미의식을 담아내고 서정적 색면추상 회화를 선보였다. 미니멀리즘 조형으로 오방색을 다양하게 구현하며 순수함과 서정을 화면에 담아냈다. 서구의 원근법이 아닌 동양의 삼원법에 기초해 ‘산을 바라보는 방식’으로 유화에서의 덧칠함이 아닌 한지위에 한 획 한 획 그어가는 기법을 차용했다. 한편 익숙한 재료인 먹의 음영과 농담을 서양회화처럼 표현하려는 시도는 색면추상으로 확장됐다. 면의 크기는 철저한 계산에 의해 황금분할하고 그윽한 색감은 연한 물감을 여러 번 덧칠하는 방법을 통해 얻는다. 서양적 미니멀리즘에 가까우면서도 동양적 깊이가 느껴지는 이유다.

After majoring in Oriental painting at Seoul National University and Dong Graduate School, he studied abroad for three years at New York University. After returning to Korea, he was active throughout the 1990s as a painter of minimalist forms, colors, and surface compositions. He has exhibited at leading galleries in Seoul, as well as in New York, Paris, and Beijing. He created lyrical color and surface abstract paintings that capture Korean aesthetics based on simple compositions and restrained colors. With his minimalist compositions, he embodies a variety of five-color palette and captures purity and lyricism in his paintings. He borrowed the technique of painting stroke by stroke on the ground, rather than overpainting in oil paintings, as a way of looking at the mountains based on the Eastern triad rather than the Western perspective. Meanwhile, the attempt to express the shades and jokes of ink, a familiar material, as in Western painting, was extended to color surface abstraction. The size of the surface is goldenly divided by thorough calculation, and the rich color is achieved by applying multiple coats of light paint. This is why the work is close to Western minimalism, yet has an Eastern depth.
